PhD position [Early-stage Researcher (ESR)]: Novel FEBID precursors – structural and compositional analysis of nanostructures

Applications are invited for the above position to work with the R&D team of Dr Jaroslav Jiruse on an EU-funded HORIZON 2020 project in the area of focused electron-beam induced deposition (FEBID) at TESCAN Ltd., with PhD study being conducted at EMPA Thun and EPFL Lausanne.
The successful candidate will be employed in TESCAN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ELENA in which young researchers investigate the chemistry and physics involved in emerging techniques for creating nanostructures.
The ELENA consortium comprises 8 academic institutions, 2 research institutes and 4 companies and is co-ordinated by the University of Iceland. Fifteen young researchers will be working in the network.

Duties and responsibilities

Candidates must be in the first 4 years of their research careers and not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in applied mathematics, physics and engineering backgrounds. Applicants must not have resided, worked or studied in the Czech Republic for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the application date. This full-time post is available on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.

The successful candidate will apply for enrolment into the Material Sciences and Engineering Doctoral Program at the EPFL, Lausanne and shall, upon successful completion, receive a PhD degree from EPFL. The project in TESCAN will focus mainly on the evaluation and performance of FEBID precursors in an industrial environment and the analysis of prepared nanostructures. The performance analysis will involve the study and selection of suitable precursors for FEBID on several resists and testing of the parameters related to deposition. A novel temperature-controlled gas injection system will be tested in the context of commercial scientific instruments. FEBID experiments will evaluate purity/growth rate as well as the contamination of vital SEM components induced by new precursors. The formed nanostructures will be studied for their compositional and structural properties including influence of scanning strategies and proximity effects. The main objective of the research is to gain insight on the physical mechanism governing these processes as well as their impact in industrial environment. The ESR will be trained in techniques of nanopatterning, especially lithography, FEBID, EDX, SEM, TEM, AFM, FIB cross sectioning and analysis by Raman and TOF-SIMS. The project will be jointly-supervised by Dr. Jiruse at TESCAN and Dr. Ivo Utke at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA).
